hp4550 error 13.5 paper jam

hp4550 worked really well and then started to get the 54.2 error. After reading one of the forums, I cleaned out all residual toner in the machine and there was a lot! That part works well now but I now get a 13.5 paper jam. The paper is not actually jamming but stopping part way out of the fuser. It happens when the paper is set to come out of the top of the printer, or out the back of the printer, or also when I use the manual paper feed. Stops in the same place.
It looks like the printer is timing out. After I get the message, if I open the back door or the centre drawer at the front and then close it again, the printer restarts and the paper is pushed out like it should have been. Problem is that I can print without getting the error on each page and having to open/shut doors/drawers.
Any idea of what I e done? Could it be all those belts inside are slipping now?

Check the sensor flag on the fuser. When paper moves thru the fuser it activates a flag which intersects a sensor to tell the printer that the paper is coming out the fuser. It appears the flag is not working so the printer times out thinking the paper is jammed in the path. The fact they when you close the back cover or open and close the center drawer the paper then comes out tells us that the flag is not working since the motors should not turn if the flag has properly activated.
