Plug the printer directly into the wall instead of the power strip.

When starting Windows ME or 98, a small amount of text may be sent to the local printer. When this occurs, the printer may not communicate and the user may receive one of the following errors:
(1) Unable to write data to the printer, please check
(2) There was an error writing to lpt1, please check
(3) Unable to write data to the printer, please check

This behavior occurs when the drvwppqt.vxd virtual device driver is loaded. The driver detects tape devices connected to the parallel port. During the detection process, a string of text is sent through the parallel port to be interpreted by tape devices. Some printers interpret this string as printable text, which may cause the printer to stop responding to printer commands.

RESOLUTION:
To prevent this virtual driver from being loaded, please follow these steps:
1. IMPORTANT! Turn off and unplug the power cord from the BJC-5000 printer.
2. Click Start, highlight Find (Search in Windows ME), then click Files Or Folders.
3. In the Named box, type "drvwppqt.vxd" (without quotation marks), and then click
Find Now (Search in Windows ME). *Make sure that the "Show all files" is set for Folder options in Windows Explorer.
4. Rename all instances of the file by changing the file name extension.
i.e. change drvwppqt.vxd to drvwppqt.vxt
You must change the extension to prevent the driver from being loaded when Windows boots up.
5. Reboot your system.
6. Plug in and turn on the BJC-5100 printer to verify if it will now respond to print commands.

NOTE 1: Do not implement this resolution if you have a tape backup device connected to a parallel (LPT) port on your computer.

NOTE 2: Microsoft has more information on the drvwppqt.vxd virtual device driver in Articles Q157145 and Q272450. To view these articles, log onto http://www.microsoft.com/ms.htm and search for the article.
